What I also want to know is: who jumped in the harbor to drag Heero out of the water after he pulled the stunt with the torpedoes?
On one hand, if someone said Relena jumped in the harbor to try and fish him out, I would 100% believe them after everything else that’s already happened in that episode. Do I think Relena could be able to swim in a party dress, carry Heero’s weight, and be strong enough to drag him out of the harbor? I’m a bit less sure on that. Like, there’s no reason she couldn’t be, but most 15 year old girls I knew didn’t quite have that kind of upper body strength.
But, you know, next time we see her in episode 3, she does have a change of clothes on. Whether that’s from being sent home after being found at a naval base in a ripped part dress, or because she was found at a naval base in a soaking wet ripped part dress remains to be seen. It’d certainly explain why it took so long to have her dress fixed though, considering it isn’t ready by Party Night. The water around military harbors isn’t exactly sparkling clean. Ship oil is probably hard to get out of fabric.
What about Duo? I’d certainly be more convinced that Duo’d have the upper body strength to get Heero out of the water and up somewhere dry so they can try and resuscitate him. But on the other hand, Duo literally has no idea what the fuck is going on at this point. Like, really. He has no idea what to make of Relena and Heero other than the fact Heero must be the pilot of Wing Gundam. And Duo is on a limited time schedule and he’d hardly want to get caught once the Alliance calls up reinforcements to deal with Heero’s attack. Being discovered wouldn’t exactly help his mission. But, by the same token, I don’t think Duo would leave him floating there either. He’s already expressed his dismay at Relena making him into the ‘bad guy’ after he thought he was saving her life.
And, as we see in episode 3, he’s hardly going to just abandon a fellow gundam pilot.
So, yeah, at this point I’m pretty sure Relena jumps in the harbor, then Duo says ‘fuck it’ and jumps in after her, and the two of them haul Heero up onto land, or back onto the sub or something before Duo books it and leaves Relena to be the one who gets credit for bringing Heero to the military hospital, and it’s Duo who stages the rescue later.
So I’ll just leave you with the mental image of waterlogged Duo and Relena fussing over an unconscious Heero.
Okay, how about this: Relena orders Duo to jump in the sea and save Heero. At first Duo is like what the heck is going on here and Relena is like you jump your ass into the harbor and save him because it’s all your fault, and Duo be like “look I have nothing to do with you and your crazy boyfriend here if you want his ass saved you jump I have other things to do”
“Do you think I can do this? Dressed like this?”
“I honestly can’t give two shits, missy”
“Look,” Relena sigh, impatiently, looking and Hero’s shape in the water, “you jumped in and shot him for no reason”
“He was pointing a gun at you”
“For no reason, and now he’s hurt and you got to fish him out because I can’t. I would if I could.”
Duo chuckles. “No doubting here.”
“For God’s sake, just hurry up!”
Duo looks at the silhouette in the water. The body is so still it could be a corpse by now. Duo sighs. “Oh, fuck it, fine. Just to prove you I’m not the bad guy here!”
“Would you hurry up?”
Duo drops the hat and jumps in the water. It’s cold and smelly and the body is so heavy that when it’s time to lift him up on the harbor he needs Missy there to come give him a hand, and now they are sitting on concrete, panting, the body between them.
Duo uses his - wet - sleeve to try and wipe out his - wetter - face. Relena is looking at the boy’s face, so worried and red Duo feels almost sorry for her. Almost.
“So now,” she starts, hes voice steadier than he had imagined. “We need to call help.”
“Yeah,” Duo says, “you do that.”
Duo makes a move to stand up but Relena stops him: “Is he breathing?”
Duo looks at the body. “Guess so?”
Relena lies down, presses her ear against the boy’s chest, then rises, face painfully purple. “I can’t hear his heart.”
Duo scoffs. “Shit.”
“What do we do?”
Duo swallows a remark about the fact that he doesn’t really have anything to do with them, and lowers his head on the boy’s chest, too. “There’s heartbeat, but it’s weak. You gotta do some CPR.”
Relena stares at him blankly. Duo sighs. “Press his chest? Push air into his lungs? Rings a bell?”
“I don’t know how to do it.”
Duo rolls his eyes. He is in for a very long night.
